Van Insurance » Van Insurance Legal Protection Van Insurance articlesMotor Legal Protection is a must for small business owners says Budget Van Insurance In a recent survey, nearly 60 per cent of van drivers said that their van was essential to the smooth running of their businesses. With this in mind you need to ensure you do everything you can to keep your wheels firmly on the road. One way of doing this is through Motor Legal Protection (MLP). MLP is one of those products that sadly, too many of us may purchase when it’s too late. If you are involved in an accident that is not you’re your fault, you have a legal right to claim back your uninsured losses or those not covered by your van insurance policy, from the person who caused the accident. MLP is designed to help you protect your legal rights. Uninsured losses can include car repairs, loss of earnings; hire care charges and medical costs. It is a commonly made mistake to assume that your insurance policy will cover these often expensive items. Hindsight is a valuable thing, at least it is for the many van drivers who fail to take it out and whose businesses suffer when things go wrong. But for those of you wanting to stay on the road through all weathers MLP is a serious must! Being self-employed means that if you crash or damage your van, you can lose your livelihood as well as your wheels until you are back on the road. It is also an unfortunate fact that despite efforts to make your vehicles more secure, through alarms or information stickers that tell potential thieves your van is empty - there are a huge number of vans broken into or damaged each year. So, added policy protection is essential to ensure that incidents like this don’t affect the running of your business. Just a couple of weeks off the road can affect your bottom line, literally, by thousands of pounds. And, as well as the immediate loss, there’s damage to professional reputation when customers feel let down by your having to cancel jobs – and this kind of loss is priceless. Courtesy vehicles are another example of why MLP can help with the smooth running of your business should your van be off the road. You may receive one through your insurance policy but this is usually discretionary and depends on a garage’s availability. If the garage has loaned out all of its courtesy vans you may be left without a vehicle. As a car driver, this is inconvenient but as a van driver or small business owner, this can be disastrous. However MLP will provide you with a replacement vehicle whether you are at fault for the incident or not, meaning for you and your customers, it’s ‘business as usual’. Also legal fees – if you have an accident that is not your fault, MLP will enable you to appoint a solicitor to try and claim back your loss of earnings as a result of the accident. Personal injury cover also means that if you can claim compensation for injuries sustained by you or your passengers. Being self employed or working for a small company, this kind of back up is essential. Despite the stereotypes about white van man and his being a menace on the roads, research has found that they are among the safest drivers. The average van driver has a clean driving licence and goes four and a half years without making a claim. The research also shows that just 17 per cent of van drivers claim on their motor policies each year – compared to 25 per cent of drivers in general. Having MLP isn’t just recommended for high risk drivers – it is beneficial for the safest. Sadly, we have no control whatsoever over the behaviour of other road users with many victims simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Any type of accident is traumatic at the best of times but when your livelihood is at stake, it adds a further blow. Budget Van Insurance MLP includes
